Karla Martinez

Aspiring Software Engineer

Hello! I am currently an undergraduate student at Macalester College pursuing a B.A. in Computer Science and Chemistry. I am committed to improving the accessibility of tech fields to underrepresented communities, and I want to pursue a career in software engineering. I am constantly honing my coding skills and learning new things, and I have an interest in the intersectionalism of STEM fields such as CS and Chemistry! I strive to push for a more positive tech world and give back to the community!

Outside of academia, you will find me creating digital or traditional art, or immersed in a song humming away!

  • I am a dedicated first gen Latina with a passion for advocacy, computer science, chemistry, and art! Since I was young, I developed a strong attachment to expressing myself through creative means, so I began creating protraits and paintings that I shared with others. I have worked on murals, commissions and personal art. As I transitioned into my career at Macalester, I took an interest in the creative aspect of the tech industry, and began learning web and app development. Ever since, I have met many amazing people who continue to support me through my endeavors as an aspiring SWE. Recently, I have been interested in AI development, and I hope to continue growing my knowledge everyday!

  • A Few Accomplishments

Here are some of the highlights of my journey as an aspiring Software Engineer!

    Girls Dream Code Intern

I worked as a SWE intern at Girls Dream Code, a Minnesota based non-profit organization that focuses on teaching young girls of color how to code and leverage their tech journey. I joined a group of 5 interns as part of the Code Sync Labs program, where we built a messaging app for GDC to maintain a network of communication with its students.

    Headstarter Tech Fellow

The program consists on the completion of five AI projects and a final project. As a track B fellow, I will be taking the backlog of a startup company and bring it to production standards.

    Google Latinx Student Leadership Summit

Chosen as 1 of 50 students across the U.S. to attend the Latinx Student Leadership Summit and meet top-end engineers.

    My Projects

Here are some fun projects I've worked on!

    Mascot Generator

I collaborated with two other students to create a mascot generator game inspired by the dress-up games we played when we were younger. The game takes place in the Macalester campus buildings and lets you customize your mascot depending on your major.

    Hangman game

In this game, I collaborated with my classmates to create a python based hangman game. The game takes words that pertain to the Macalester community and lets you guess for a certain number of times.
